I read from Yahoo News:

Sydney Morning Herald writer Tamara Thiessen wrote that Singaporeans are
ungracious, uncivic conscious and rude.

She wrote:
An IT manager from Sydney who is based in Singapore, Paul Stapleton, is
quoted in the article saying, "They (Singaporeans) are the rudest f***ing
people I have ever seen; they need some basic training in civic awareness.
They don't feel that anyone else exists outside this tiny island."

Another long-time British resident staying here added, "The problem is the
sole concern of most Singaporeans is money and economic well-being. The only
reason the churches here are packed to the rafters is because people attend
in order to network."

Yes, these foreign talents cannot stand Singaporeans. Their luck to meet
rude Singaporeans or is it because they met Singaporeans who are smarter
than them!. But who think a world of themselves. I am sure they are people
like this and I am sure there also many many Singaporeans who are not only
civic conscious, kind and gracious but also generous and angelic. Maybe
these chow ang mo have a point. A segment of our population are still
uncivilised and have treated our foreign talent with disdain. Who are these
people? Singapore is so metropolitan now. Have they met with new migrants
from Romania, Israel, Russia, Vietnam, China or India or eleswhere, I
wonder?

The reality is the "Singaporean" Paul Stapleton met could be just
another foreigner residing in Singapore. Don't forget, almost 40% of
Singapore residential population are foreign borned. and within the
working population of 3.2 million, almost 50% are foreigners. Hence he
could have mistaken a foreigner for a local.

In my own daily experience, the rudest people I've met are often
foreigners. They are the Indians, Chinese nationals, Indonesian,
Filipinos, Taiwanese, Malaysian, etc, etc. In contrast, the kindest
people I have met are Singaporean. I was rescued from a bicycle accident
by a Singaporean. When I was hungry, another Singaporean offered free
meals to me. Where are those "kind foreigners" when you need them?

My overall impression is that we Singaporean seems to be too nice
nowadays we are constantly being bullied and belittled by foreigners.
The worse thing is our PAP govt and our employers often sided with these
foreigners which made Singaporean look even worse in many ways.

I am sure if Paul Stapleton return to Sydney or Melbourne or Canberra
Australia and 40% of Australia population are foreign born, he would
find them rude too. If not, why would Aussie burned Indians in Australia ?

From the language used by Paul Stapleton, I wouldn't say that he is an
angel either.

But I do think that Singapore still have a long way to go to become
gracious.society.

I hope some Social Researchers will study the Singapore culture and
its people and offer constructive suggestions on how to become a more
gracious society. Generally, Singaporeans are quite OK and helpful.
However, their tone of voice and sentence structure may be functional
but crude, cut and dry and may lead others to think that they are
being rude. Singlish for locals may be tolerable and even fun but I am
not sure if it may become a barrier with foreigners.

Here is an video clip of an accident at Eunos MRT Station where the
announcer uses typical Singlish and although helpful, she sounded very
unprofessional and her tone of voice actually makes the situation
worse by heightening the anxiety level. The staff needs to be better
trained.

Please take a look and comment.
