DENNIS Lee Kim Yew, a founding partner of the law firm Lee & Lee and
younger brother of Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, died early on Friday
morning of cancer, at the Singapore General Hospital.
He would have been 78 on Dec 5.
He leaves a wife, Gloria, founder of Kim Eng Securities; son Howe
Yong, daughters Amy and Lena, and three stepchildren - Carol, Douglas
and Ronald Ooi.
He'd had kidney cancer and it had returned and spread. All his
siblings - including brothers Freddy and Suan Yew, and sister Monica -
had seen him on Monday.
Said his brother Suan Yew: 'When he knew he had cancer, he was
prepared to die but he didn't stay in a box and cry. He was a great
fighter, and he had no fear. He went out there and continued to play
golf and meet his friends, until the very end.'
His daughter Amy, a lawyer in Lee & Lee, said last night: 'He was a
stoic and never once complained though he had been in and out of
hospital since July. Whenever he was sick, he would just check into
hospital.'
He started Lee & Lee on Sept 1, 1955 with Mr and Mrs Lee Kuan Yew.
When his brother became Prime Minister in 1959, Dennis and Mrs Lee, or
as she was also known, Madam Kwa Geok Choo took over. It is now one of
the largest law firms here.
Mr Dennis Lee was active as a consultant with the firm until his last
days, though he had retired as a partner in December 1995.
